The Seven Ridges of Mount Lu in the Jin meet together in the east to form peaks and precipices. Their cliffs are so sheer and steep that none could climb them. During the Taiyuan era of the Jin, Fan Ning, the Grand Administrator of Yuzhang, was about to build an academy and sent men to cut timber. On that mountain, they saw a man wearing the robes of a śramaṇa, soaring straight up through the void. Having arrived, he turned back, perched on the peak, and after a good while vanished together with the clouds and mist. At the time, several herb gatherers all witnessed it together. The literary men of that era were all inspired by it. Śramaṇa Shi Tandi, in his *Mount Lu Rhapsody*, wrote: ‘An arhat soars through the clouds to perch on the peak; disappearing into the distance, he enters the unseen.’
