Furthermore, the Sūtra of the Wise and the Foolish says: At that time, a deva from the Śuddhāvāsa Heaven descended to Jambudvīpa, went to the World-Honored One, and invited the Buddha and the saṃgha to bathe and receive offerings. The World-Honored One silently assented. The deva immediately prepared food and drink, and also furnished bathing utensils and a bathhouse, with warm water properly adjusted, ghee, oil, and soap-grass—all fully provided. Thereupon, the World-Honored One and all the bhikṣus accepted his offering, bathed together, and then partook of a rich meal; the food was sweet and delicious, rare in the world. When the meal was finished, they rinsed their mouths and each returned to their own place. At that time, Ānanda addressed the Buddha, "What merit did this deva perform in the past to have a bodily form so exquisite, majestic marks so extraordinary, and brilliance so radiant, like a great mountain of jewels?" The Buddha told Ānanda, "Long ago, in the time of Vipaśyin Buddha, this deva was a son of a poor family in that lifetime, constantly working for hire to supply his body and mouth. Hearing the Buddha explain the merit of bathing the saṃgha, his heart was delighted, and he worked diligently, obtaining a small amount of money and grain to prepare bathing utensils and food and drink, inviting the Buddha and the monastic saṃgha to offer them completely. Due to this meritorious practice, after his life ended, he was born in the Śuddhāvāsa Heaven and possessed these radiant marks. From the seven Buddhas down to the appearance of a thousand Buddhas, he has also bathed the Buddhas and their saṃghas in this manner." The Buddha bestowed a prophecy upon him, saying, "In a future age, within two asaṃkhyeyas and a hundred kalpas, you shall become a Buddha named Pure Body, complete with the ten epithets."
