When Ji Huanzi was digging a well, he obtained what looked like an earthen jar with a sheep inside. He immediately asked Zhongni, saying: ‘I dug a well and obtained a dog—why is that?’ Zhongni said: ‘According to what Qiu has heard, it is a sheep. Qiu has heard that anomalies of wood and stone are the quji and wangliang; anomalies of water are dragons and wangxiang; anomalies of earth are called benyang.’ The Xia ding zhi says: ‘The wangxiang resembles a three-year-old child, with red eyes, a black body, large ears, long arms, and red claws. If bound with rope, it can be eaten.’ The Prince said: ‘The essence of wood becomes youguang; the essence of metal becomes qingming.’
