During the Yuankang era of the Jin, in the household of Huai Yao of Lou County in Wu Commandery, the muffled sound of a puppy was suddenly heard underground. Above it was a small hole the size of an earthworm. Yao poked it with a staff; after penetrating several feet, he felt something like an object. Digging down to look, he obtained two puppies, one female and one male, whose eyes were not yet open. In size, they were like normal dogs. When fed, they ate. Neighbors all went to look at them. An elder remarked: ‘This is called a rhinoceros dog (xigou). Whoever obtains it will make his household wealthy and flourishing; you ought to rear it.’ Because their eyes were not yet open, he placed them back in the hole and covered it with a millstone. The next day, when he uncovered it to look, there were no holes all around, and they had vanished without a trace. Over the years, Yao's family experienced neither misfortune nor good fortune.
