The Buddha told Bianyi: "There are further five things through which one enters hell at death, emerging only after a hundred million kalpas. What are the five? First, not believing that there are the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Saṃgha, but engaging in slander, disparaging and defaming the holy path. Second, destroying Buddhist monasteries and venerable shrines. Third, the fourfold assembly slandering one another in turn, disregarding calamities and offenses, lacking any mind of reverent compliance. Fourth, treason and rebellion, lacking high or low, ruler and minister, father and son not obeying one another. Fifth, in the future, if one wishes to practice the path, having already attained the path, not complying with the master's teachings, but becoming conceited, despising and slandering the master. These are the five things through which one enters hell at death, cycling through the hells with no time of release. There are further five things through which one falls among hungry ghosts. What are the five? First, stinginess and greed, not wishing to practice dāna. Second, stealing, and not being filial to both parents. Third, foolish darkness, lacking a mind of loving-kindness. Fourth, hoarding wealth and possessions, refusing to clothe or feed oneself. Fifth, not providing for parents, siblings, wife and children, or servants. These are the five things through which one falls among hungry ghosts.
