左傳昭二年子產對趙景子曰。人生死化曰魄。既生魄陽曰魂。用物精多則魂魄強。是以有精爽至於神明。匹夫匹婦強死。其魂魄猶能憑依於人以為淫厲。況良霄乎。

In the Zuo Zhuan, in the second year of Duke Zhao, Zichan replied to Zhao Jingzi, saying: "When a human being is born, the transformation [into form] is called po; once the po is born, its yang aspect is called hun. If one uses material essences in great abundance, then hun and po become strong. Hence one possesses refinement and brilliance reaching even to spiritual radiance. If an ordinary man or woman dies a violent death, their hun and po are still able to possess people and cause wicked scourges; how much more so with Liangxiao!"
