As stated in the Bodhisattvabhūmi: 'The offerings made by a bodhisattva to the Tathāgata are, in brief, of ten kinds: first, offerings to the body; second, offerings to caityas; third, offerings in presence; fourth, offerings not in presence; fifth, offerings made by oneself; sixth, offerings made by others; seventh, offerings of material goods; eighth, superior offerings; ninth, untainted offerings; tenth, offerings through reaching the path. If a bodhisattva makes offerings to the physical form body of the Buddha, this is termed an offering to the body. If a bodhisattva, for the sake of the Tathāgata, makes offerings to a stūpa, a cave, a shrine, old or new, this is termed an offering to caityas. If a bodhisattva makes offerings seeing face-to-face the Buddha's body or a caitya, this is termed an offering in presence. If a bodhisattva makes offerings in presence to the Tathāgata and caityas accompanied by an aspiring mind and a joyful mind—just as to one Tathāgata, so too across the three times, making offerings in presence to the Tathāgatas and caityas of immeasurable worlds in the ten directions and three times, whether new or old—this is termed a bodhisattva's shared offering in presence.
