Furthermore, the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: When a monk rises in the morning, he should wash his hands cleanly; he must not wash them roughly. The five fingers also must not reach up to the armpits; he should wash up to the wrists to make them clean, and must not be careless. In washing, he must not rub so hard as to cause bleeding. He should use powdered sesame, or ashes and earth (soap-powder and Chinese honeylocust), rubbing his hands until they make a sound. If, after washing his hands clean, he rubs them together again, it is called impure, and he should wash his hands again. Before eating, a monk should guard his hands; if he touches his head or holds his robes, he must wash them again (this applies to monks, and it is also so for laypeople). Reading sūtras, receiving food, and so forth should follow this practice. If this is so for hand purity, how much more so for killing living beings with one's hands, drinking blood, and eating meat, thereby defiling body and mouth? Even if one wishes to transmit the Dharma, one's mind will also be impure.
