Furthermore, the Śāstra on Ānanda's Inquiries on the Vinaya says: When monks, nuns, layfolk, and others, while reading the sūtras, vinaya, and śāstras, talk while walking with [the texts] held in hand turning the scrolls, according to the years of the Trāyastriṃśa heaven, they commit a grave duṣkṛta. As a secondary retribution, for two hundred million years they will fall among roe deer and deer, where their spines are constantly broken in pain hard to endure. Engaging in neutral, idle talk while holding the sūtras, vinaya, and śāstras also incurs the aforementioned retribution. Or if one places sūtras or images under the eaves of rooms or halls, according to the years of the Trāyastriṃśa heaven, for eight hundred years [they incur] the fault of a grave duṣkṛta offense; as a secondary retribution, for two hundred million years they will be born among pigs and dogs. If they attain a human body, for one hundred million years they will constantly be guests and drudges, never obtaining self-mastery.
