The teacher, through material goods and the Dharma, samādhi and wisdom, gathers himself and embraces the other, maintaining without loss; the disciple, through offerings and remonstrance, also embraces the teacher. ○ The Nanshan Manual says: 'That the Buddhadharma increases and expands is truly due to teacher and disciple mutually embracing and sincerely treating one another. With material goods and Dharma both benefiting, their karma deepens day by day, and through prolonged practice their virtue solidifies—all depend on this. Lately, the true teaching has declined and the breeze of wisdom has ceased to blow; the laity harbor contempt and disrespect, while the monastics commit unlawful acts; this is all because teachers lack the mind to guide and lead, and disciples lack the resolve to obey and practice. When the two abandon each other and wander recklessly into base realms, if one wishes for the Path to shine, how could it be possible?' (To state the essential points).
