The Bodhisattva-bhadraśīla-sūtra states: 'If as a master one cannot instruct and rebuke disciples, one destroys the Buddha-Dharma and shall fall into hell.' / The Vinaya states: 'Only when a disciple has five matters may he be instructed and rebuked: first, lack of faith; second, indolence; third, harsh speech; fourth, no sense of shame in his mind; fifth, associating with bad companions.' The Buddha said that if there is even one among the five matters, he must be instructed and rebuked. A monk asked the Buddha: 'How should he be instructed and rebuked?' There are five methods: 'First, not speaking with him; second, not instructing him; third, not sharing utilities; fourth, barring his wholesome deeds and not granting him dependence; fifth, not sharing a room with him.'
