The *Guangya* states: “[This character] means hot.” The *Kaosheng* states: “Burning firewood where the intense fire crackles.” The *Yunying* states: “The bursting of fire is called [this character].” The *Shuowen jiezi* states: “To scorch; it is composed of the radical *huǒ* (fire) with [晏-女+(大/((犀-尸)-牛+十))] as phonetic.” *Zhà* (灹) is pronounced *zhai* + *jia* in fanqie; *zhuó* (灼) is pronounced *zhang* + *yao* in fanqie).
