Jambudvīpa, the southern continent (南贍部洲: pronounced *shi* + *ran* in fanqie, in the falling tone. In Sanskrit, this is the general name for this great earth. In older translations it was variously called *Zhanfu* [譫浮], *Yanfu* [琰浮], or *Yanfuti* [閻浮提], all of which are corruptions of the Sanskrit. The correct Sanskrit sound is *jambudvīpa* (㣅謨). The *Lokasthiti-abhidharma-śāstra* states: “There is a jambu tree growing on the northern border of this continent, on the southern bank of the Nimindhara River, precisely at the center of the continent, overlooking the water to the north. Beneath the tree, at the bottom of the water beneath the southern bank, there is jambu gold, anciently called *jambūnada-gold*. The tree derives its name from the gold, and the continent takes its designation from the tree; hence it is named Jambu.” The pronunciation is like *zhān* (譫), pronounced *zhi* + *ye* in fanqie. *Jamb* (㣅) is pronounced *can* + *lan* in fanqie, taking the rising tone of the character *lǎn*).
