啄噉(上音卓廣雅啄齧也說文鳥食也從口豖聲也豖音寵綠反經文從彖作喙非也喙音吁穢反下唐濫反廣雅噉食也說文作㖤或作啖竝通經文作淡非也淡無味也非經義也)。

Pecking and devouring (啄噉: the first character is pronounced *zhuo*. The *Guangya* states: “*Zhuó* means to bite.” The *Shuowen jiezi* states: “Birds feeding; it is composed of the radical *kǒu* (mouth) with *chù* as phonetic.” *Chù* (豖) is pronounced *chong* + *lü* in fanqie. In the sūtra text it is written with *tuàn* as 喙, which is incorrect; *huì* is pronounced *xu* + *hui* in fanqie. The second character is pronounced *tang* + *lan* in fanqie. The *Guangya* states: “*Dàn* means to eat.” In the *Shuowen jiezi* it is written as 㖤, or written as 啖, both of which are acceptable. In the sūtra text it is written as 淡, which is incorrect; *dàn* means flavorless, not the meaning intended by the sūtra).
