華鬘 (The first character is pronounced huā; properly speaking the character has no huā sound, but should correspond to it. The second character has the fanqie man + ban [mán], which is a phonetic loan; its original pronunciation has the fanqie mi + ran [mián], which is not adopted here. A flower garland is an ornament for adorning the body used by the people of the Western regions. In Sanskrit it is called mālā—mā has the fanqie mo + ke [mǒ]—which is translated here as 'flower garland'. According to the customary practices of the five regions of India, they gather seasonal blossoms of herbs and trees, arrange them in blending colors, thread them on strings, and bind them into flower garlands. Regardless of nobility or lowliness, people adorn their bodies and heads with them as beautiful ornaments, calling them mālā. The Shuowen says it is derived from biāo [髟, hair] with mián [𦤔] phonetic. Biāo has the fanqie bi + yao [biāo]; 𦤔 is pronounced mián).
