Rāhula (何羅怙羅: 怙 is 胡 + 古 fanqie. Older translations have 曷羅怙羅, or 羅吼羅, or also 吼羅, or 羅雲, or 羅睺羅. In Sanskrit this means being born at the time of a solar eclipse, and he was named after this. Alternatively, it is translated as 'concealment and obstruction' (覆障), because he remained in his mother's womb for six years, covered and obstructed by the womb. A sūtra says: 'He was in his mother's womb for seven years: first, because of past karma; second, because of present conditions. As for past karma: in the past he had once been a king who forbade solitary buddhas from entering his domain, causing a solitary buddha living in the mountains to be unable to beg for food for seven days. Due to this karma, he fell into hell, and with its remnant retribution he spent seven years in his mother's womb. As for present conditions: after Yaśodharā conceived Rāhula, the crown prince left home and practiced austerities for six years before attaining enlightenment; during these six years, Yaśodharā was so sorrowful and worried that her four elements were frail and weak, and she was unable to give birth. After the crown prince attained enlightenment, Yaśodharā was joyful and her four elements became strong, and only then was she able to give birth. Hence from beginning to end it took a full seven years. When the Tathāgata returned to his country, after seven days he first ordained Rāhula to leave the household life').
