Market stalls and shops (廛肆: the upper character [market lot (廛)] is 長 [chang] + 連 [lian] [chán]. The Yupian says: 'An open space within a market.' The lower character [market stall (肆)] is pronounced 四 [sì]. Kong's commentary on the Shangshu says: '肆 means to set out.' Du's commentary on the Zuo zhuan says: '肆 means to arrange.' It means arranging and displaying merchandise in a market. Character glossaries say: 'Dwelling place.' It is composed of 長 with an abbreviation of 聿 as phonetic).
