Thick broth and thin soup (羹[腕-夗+隹]: the upper character is g[èng]-héng [fǎn]; the Erya says: "Salt and plum condiments make a soup (羹)." Gu Yewang says: "Blending and harmonizing the five flavors is called gēng (羹)." The Shuowen takes lì (鬲), writing 羹; also written 𩱋 or [(弼-百+?)/羊], all being ancient characters. The lower character is h[ē]-gè [fǎn]; Wang Yi's commentary on the Chuci says: "Soup with vegetables is called gēng (羹); soup without vegetables is called huò (𦞦)." The Shuowen says it takes the flesh radical (肉) and hè (寉) phonetic. 寉 is pronounced hé. In the sūtra written as 臛 is an error).
