訶叱（上壑哥反考聲云訶𧨚也怒也問也責也古文從止從可作苛經文作呵俗字也下齒栗反禮記曰尊客之前不叱狗文字典說云從口七聲也）。

訶叱 [To scold and berate]: The first character is read with the fanqie 壑 [h-] + 哥 [-ē] (hē). The Kaosheng says: '訶 means to shout; to be angry; to question; to rebuke.' The ancient form is written as 苛 from 止 and 可. The scripture writes 呵, which is a colloquial form. The second character is read with the fanqie 齒 [ch-] + 栗 [-ì] (chì). The Classic of Rites says: 'In front of an honoured guest, one does not scold (叱) a dog.' The Wenzidian shuo says: 'Formed from 口 (mouth) with 七 acting as phonetic.'
