[Roaring sound]: Read with the fanqie 呼 [h-] + 狗 [-ǒu] (hǒu); a colloquial character. The standard character is written with the ox radical as 𤘽; the ancient form is 呴. The Kaosheng says: '吼 refers to a loud roaring sound, such as the roaring of oxen, tigers, and the like. For dogs it is called barking (吠); for horses, neighing (嘶); for birds, chirping (鳴); for beasts, howling (噑); each follows its kind.' The Guangya says: 'A great crying.' Examining this: 吼 means to shout and cry out. The Gujin zhengzi writes 吽, the cry of bears; formed from 口 (mouth), both being phono-semantic characters.
