(The upper character is pronounced 池 + 林 fanqie. Gu Yewang says: '沈 means to submerge.' The Shuowen says: 'It derives from 水 with 冘 as phonetic.' 冘 is pronounced 淫. The lower character is pronounced 泥 + 歷 fanqie. The Liji states that Confucius said: 'A gentleman is drowned by his mouth; a petty man is drowned by water.' The Shuowen says: 'Submerged in water; properly it derives from 人 as 㲻, but nowadays it is commonly written as 溺.' 水溺 in the Shuowen is the name of a river; the Shangshu says: 'He guided the Ruoshui eastward to flow west to Heti').
