Eight cords of the cosmos (八紘: *huo-meng* fanqie; Xu Shuzhong's commentary on the *Huainanzi* says: *hong* means cord; Gu Yewang says: the eight *hong* refers to the eight extremities; the *Gujin zhengzi* says it derives from 糸 with 厷 as phonetic; 厷 has the same sound as above).
