Having lapis lazuli as its trunk (幹 is pronounced 哥旱. *Liuli* in Sanskrit is fully *vaiḍūrya*, which translates as 'not-distant mountain'. It refers to a mountain in the Western Regions not far from the city of Vārāṇasī; because this jewel is produced there, it was named after it. As for *gan*, character dictionaries say: "*Gan* means trunk/thick branch," referring to its stoutness. The character should properly be written with 干; versions of the sūtra written with the wood radical [木] are erroneous. According to Kong Anguo's commentary on the *Classic of Documents*, Du [Yu]'s commentary on the *Zuo tradition*, and an examination of the *Yupian*, the character with 干 refers to a thick tree branch, while that with 木 refers to planks used for building earthen walls—the planks at both ends are called *zhen*, and those along the two walls are called *gan*).
