荊棘 (Brambles and thorns: The upper character has the fanqie 景迎 [jīng]. The Guangya says: 'Chu is 荊; there are differences such as zhuangjing and manjing. Those with red stems and large fruits are zhuangjing, and there is also shanjing.' The Guangzhou ji says: 'Meina County produces golden chaste trees.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'A tree of Chu; derived from 艸 [grass] with the sound 刑.' The lower character has the fanqie 兢力 [jí]. The Fangyan says: 'Between the Changjiang and Huai Rivers, all plants and trees with thorns that hurt people are called 棘.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'Sour jujube, a thorny woody plant growing in clusters; derived from two 朿 alongside each other.' The sūtra writes it with two 釆, which is incorrect).
