[Nest and burrow] (The first character has the fanqie of 士 [dz-] and 交 [-au]: Zheng's commentary on the *Classic of Poetry* says, "A magpie's making of a nest begins building at the winter solstice and is completed by spring." Zheng's commentary on the *Kaogongji* says, "'Cháo' (巢) is like 'high'." The *Shuowen jiezi* says, "Birds on a tree are called 'cháo'. It is formed from 'tree' (木) and is pictographic." The sūtra writes it as 巢, which is a vulgar character. The second character has the fanqie of 卩 [k-] and 骨 [-uet]: Du's commentary on the *Zuozhuan* says, "A 'kū' (窟) is an underground chamber." Gu Yewang says, "Living in hollowed-out caves in winter is an example of this." The *Shenglei* says, "A 'kū' is a place where rabbits lie hidden." The *Shuowen jiezi* says, "It is formed from 'cave' (穴) and the 'qū' (屈) phonetic." It is also written as 𩨳 or 堀, pronounced the same as above).
