髀脛（上蒲米反說文髀股外也從骨卑聲或作䯗經作䏶俗字也下形定反孔注論語云脛脚脛也顧野王云脛謂腓膓前骨是說文脛亦胻也從肉巠聲巠音工冷反腓音[夗-夕+月]胻音鶴昂反又音杏也）。

[Thigh and shin] (The first character has the fanqie of 蒲 [b-] and 米 [-ie]: the *Shuowen jiezi* says, "The 'bì' (髀) is the outer side of the thigh. It is formed from 'bone' (骨) and the 'bēi' (卑) phonetic." It is also written as 䯗; the sūtra writing it as 䏶 is a vulgar form. The second character has the fanqie of 形 [ɦ-] and 定 [-eŋ]: Kong's commentary on the *Analects* says, "'Jìng' (脛) is the shin of the leg." Gu Yewang says, "'Jìng' refers to the bone in front of the calf muscle." The *Shuowen jiezi* says, "'Jìng' also means the lower leg (胻). It is formed from 'flesh' (肉) and the 'jīng' (巠) phonetic." 'Jīng' has the fanqie of 工 [k-] and 冷 [-eŋ]; 'féi' (腓) is pronounced [夗-夕+月] [b-]; 'héng' (胻) has the fanqie of 鶴 [ɦ-] and 昂 [-ɑŋ], and is also pronounced 杏 [ɦ-]).
