灰燼（下夕刃反杜注左傳云火之餘木也毛詩傳云火餘曰燼說文正作𱫮火餘也一曰薪也從火聿聲經作燼俗字也）。

灰燼 (The second character is pronounced with the fanqie 夕 + 刃. Du's commentary on the Zuozhuan says: the leftover wood of a fire. The Mao commentary on the Shijing says: the remnants of a fire are called 燼. The Shuowen says: properly written 𱫮; the remnants of a fire; another definition is firewood; it takes the 'fire' radical and 聿 as phonetic. In the sūtra it is written 燼, which is a vulgar character.)
