Balustrades and railings (闌楯; the first character is *lan* + *dan* [lán], the second is *chun* + *run* [shǔn]; Guo's commentary on the *Shanhaijing* says: "闌 means a balustrade." Wang's commentary on the *Chuci* says: "Railing bars; the vertical ones are called 檻, the horizontal ones are called 楯." Gu Yewang says: "This refers to the hook-railings on a palace hall." The *Shuowen jiezi* says: "楯 is also a railing; it has the gate radical and 柬 [jiǎn] as sound; 楯 has the wood radical and 盾 as sound; 盾 is pronounced *chún* + *zhǔn* [dùn]." The sūtra text writes 欄; the *Picang* says it is a tree name, which is an error in the sūtra text).
