Beams and ridgepoles (梁棟; *dong* + *nong* [dòng]; the *Zhouyi* says: "Above are the ridgepoles, below are the rafters, to withstand wind and rain." The *Shuowen jiezi* says: "棟 is the crest of a house; it has the wood radical and the *dong* sound").
