保母（報抱反鄭箋毛詩云保守孔注尚書保安也鄭注禮記云慎其身者謂安保護之也說文保養也從人孚省聲孚音拊無反經作㨐音普苟反蒼頡篇云拊㨐擊也說文㨐衣上擊也案保母者懷抱菩薩安養之母也不可擊此母而令抱菩薩耶乖於經義其字非也）。

Wet-nurse (保母; *bao* + *bao* [bǎomǔ]; Zheng's note on the *Mao Shijing* says: "保 means to protect and hold." Kong's commentary on the *Shangshu* says: "保 means to make peaceful." Zheng's commentary on the *Liji* says: "Those who are cautious with their person are said to protect and keep it safe." The *Shuowen jiezi* says: "保 means to nourish; it has the person radical and the abbreviated sound of 孚; 孚 is pronounced *fǔ* + *wú* [fú]." The sūtra writes 㨐, pronounced *pǔ* + *gǒu* [bǎo]; the *Cangjiepian* says: "拊 and 㨐 mean to strike." The *Shuowen jiezi* says: "㨐 means striking upon clothing." Now, a 保母 is a nurse who holds the bodhisattva in her arms and lovingly rears him; how could she strike this mother to make her hold the bodhisattva? This contradicts the scriptural meaning, so the character is erroneous).
