Sinews and vessels (筋脈: the upper character is 謹欣 fanqie. The *Record of Rites* says: "The elderly do not use muscular strength (筋力) for ceremonial etiquette," which is this. The *Shuowen* states: "*Jin* (筋) is the strength of the flesh; derived from 肉 and 竹 (bamboo)—bamboo being something with many fibers; and derived from 力 (strength)—strength representing the form of sinews." The sūtra sometimes writes it with 角 and 艸 as 筋, which is a vulgar character. The lower character is 孟百 fanqie. The *Kaosheng* states: "Properly written as 衇; 脈 is also vulgar." The *Shuowen* states: "The branches of blood running obliquely through the body; derived from 𠂢, with 血 as its phonetic component." 𠂢 is pronounced 拍賣 fanqie. The sūtra writes it with 肉 as 脉; because its transmission and usage have been long-standing, it is preserved here).
