游泳(酉幽反顧野王云游浮於水上而進也鄭注周禮云僃沉溺也說文從水斿聲下榮命反毛詩云潛行水中為泳郭注尒雅云水底行也說文同毛詩從水永聲)。
游泳 (swimming and diving: [the upper character] has the fanqie you + you. Gu Yewang says: "You (游) means floating on water and moving forward." Zheng's commentary on the Zhouli says: "Guarding against drowning." The Shuowen says it is formed with the "water" semantic classifier and the you (斿) phonetic component. The lower character has the fanqie rong + ming. The Maoshi says: "Traveling submerged under water is called yong (泳)." Guo's commentary on the Erya says: "Moving along the water's bottom." The Shuowen agrees with the Maoshi; it is formed with the "water" semantic classifier and the yong (永) phonetic component).
