調戲（條弔反毛詩傳云調嘲也下希義反郭註爾雅云戲謂相調戲也說文調從言周聲經從手作掉掉謂搖也非此義說文戲字從戈䖒聲也䖒音許衣反經作戱俗字也）。

調戲 (the first character: fanqie 條 + 弔; the Mao Commentary on the Shijing states: "調 means to tease or banter." The second: fanqie 希 + 義; Guo Pu's commentary on the Erya states: "戲 means playful teasing." The Shuowen jiezi states: "調 is derived from 言 with 周 as phonetic." The sūtra text writing it with 手 as 掉 means shaking, which is not this meaning. The Shuowen jiezi states: "The character 戲 is derived from 戈 with 䖒 as phonetic; 䖒 is pronounced with fanqie 許 + 衣." The sūtra text writes 戱, which is a vulgar character).
