達嚫（叉覲反經中或作大櫬梵言訛也案尊婆須蜜論亦作檀此云財施解言報施之法名曰達櫬導引福地亦名達櫬復次割意所愛成彼施度於今所益義是檀嚫又西域記云達櫬拏者右也或言䭾器尼以用右手受人所施為其生福故從之立名也經中言福田者是也華嚴經中功德達嚫即其義也律文從口作嚫近字也）。

達嚫 [dakṣiṇā] (Pronounced with the fanqie 叉覲 [chèn]. In sūtras it is sometimes written 大櫬; this is a Sanskrit corruption. Examining the *Vasu-mitra-śāstra, it is also written 檀 [dāna]; here translated as material donation. Explanations say: the method of requiting a donation is called dakṣiṇā, and guiding someone to a field of merit is also called dakṣiṇā. Furthermore, renouncing what one cherishes to fulfill another's perfection of giving, in terms of present benefit, constitutes dakṣiṇā. Moreover, the Xiyu ji states that dakṣiṇa means 'right', or it is called dākiṇī; because one receives another's donation with the right hand to generate merit for them, it was named after this. What the sūtras call a 'field of merit' is precisely this. In the Avataṃsaka-sūtra, 'merit dakṣiṇā' carries this meaning. Vinaya texts write 嚫 with the mouth radical, which is a recent graph).
