瓦礫 (tiles and rubble: the first character is [pronounced with the fanqie] 五寡. The Shuowen jiezi says: 'Wǎ (瓦) means earthenware vessels; it is a pictograph. Used for covering houses, the female [tile] [毘胤] is called bǎn (瓪, pronounced 板), and the male [tile] [母] is called tóng (㼧, pronounced 同).' The second character is [pronounced with the fanqie] 力的. The Shuowen jiezi says: 'Lì (礫) means small stones; also fragmented stones, coarse gravel.' What the present sūtra refers to as tiles and rubble (瓦礫) metaphorically designates broken tiles and fragmented stones that have been discarded.)
