潛伏（上寂鹽反爾雅潛沉也廣雅潛沒也說文涉水也從水朁七敢反聲也經從二天作潛非也下馮福反集訓云伏隱也廣雅伏藏也說文云伏伺也伏伺人也故從人從犬會意字也）。

潛伏 ("to hide and conceal"): The first character has the fanqie reading [dz- + -jɛm = qián] (寂鹽反). The Erya says: "潛 means to submerge." The Guangya says: "潛 means to sink beneath the surface." The Shuowen says: "To wade through water. It is formed with the radical 水 ('water') and 朁 (fanqie 七敢反) as phonetic." In the sūtra it is written with two 天 as [替 with 水], which is incorrect. The second character has the fanqie reading [b- + -juk = fú] (馮福反). The Jixun says: "伏 means to hide." The Guangya says: "伏 means to conceal." The Shuowen says: "伏 means to lie in wait. To lie in wait for a person; hence it is formed with the radical 人 ('person') and 犬 ('dog'), as an ideographic compound (huiyi)."
