翱翔（上我高反下徐羊反鄭玄箋毛詩云翱翔猶逍遙也韓詩云翱翔遊也爾雅翱翔鳥飛也集訓曰翱翔高飛也考聲云鳥飛往來緩緩貌也古作翔說文云翱翔迴飛也竝從羽臯音高羊皆聲也）。

翱翔 ("to soar and glide"): The first character has the fanqie reading [ŋ- + -ɑu = áo] (我高反); the second character has the fanqie reading [z- + -jɑŋ = xiáng] (徐羊反). Zheng Xuan's commentary on the Mao Shi says: "翱翔 is equivalent to carefree roaming (逍遙)." The Han Shi says: "翱翔 means roaming around." The Erya says: "翱翔 refers to birds flying." The Jixun says: "翱翔 means soaring high." The Kaosheng says: "It describes the appearance of birds flying back and forth slowly and leisurely." In ancient forms it was written 翔. The Shuowen says: "翱翔 means to circle in flight. Both are formed with the radical 羽 ('feathers'), with 臯 (pronounced gāo) and 羊 respectively as phonetics."
