革屣 (The standard form of the upper character 革 is derived from 三十 ('thirty') and 臼, forming a compound ideograph; meaning that thirty years make a generation, during which principles change. The lower character is [pronounced with the] fanqie 師滓 [xǐ]. Now as for the term leather sandals: the Mao Commentary to the Classic of Poetry says: "Ge means animal hide."
