Midges and gnats (蠓蜹: the upper character has the fanqie m[éng] + [k]ǒng; the Zhuangzi says: 'An ape in a tree is like mièměng midges to a snake.' Gu Yewang says: 'Měng is a tiny flying insect.' The Shuowen says: 'Mièměng; it takes chóng as radical and méng as phonetic.' The lower character has the fanqie r[uò] + [sh]uì, which is the correct character for ruì. The treatise text writes 蚋, which is a vulgar character. The Gujin zhengzi says: 'Qin called them ruì, Chu called them wén (mosquitoes); it takes chóng as radical and ruì as phonetic.' Miè has the fanqie mián + bié; wén has the sound wén; ruì has the same sound as above).
