Toil and distress (劬勞: the first character has the fanqie 具俱; the Mao Commentary on the Odes says: 'Toiling painfully in the wilderness.' Han Ying's Commentary on the Odes says: '劬 means frequent/distress.' Zheng's Commentary on the Book of Rites says: '劬 also means toil.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'Formed from [the semantic component] "strength" (力) and has 句 as phonetic.').
