齋戒（古文作誡同古薤反易云以此齋戒韓康伯曰洒心曰齋防患曰戒字林齋戒潔也齋亦齊也廣雅戒備也字從廾持戈以戒不虞也廾音拱又作拜同也）。

齋戒 [purification and precepts] (In ancient script, written identically as 誡. Fanqie: 古薤 [gǔ + xiè, *jiè*]. The *Changes* says: 'By means of this purification and precepts.' Han Kangbo says: 'Cleansing the mind is called 齋; guarding against distress is called 戒.' The *Zilin* states: '齋戒 means pure and clean; 齋 also means even [齊].' The *Guangya* states: '戒 means preparedness.' The character consists of 廾 holding a dagger-axe [戈] to guard against unforeseen occurrences. 廾 is pronounced 拱 [gǒng], and also written 拜 [bài], identical).
