臭穢（上昌獸反玉篇臭者凡物氣之總名說文禽走臭而知其跡者犬也從犬從自自者古文鼻字也經從死作臰者非也下於喙反顧野王曰穢者不清潔也韻英穢惡也考聲荒蕪也或作薉也說文從禾歲聲也）。

Foul and filthy (臭穢: the first character is pronounced 昌 + 獸 fanqie; Yupian says: 臭 is a general name for the odour of all things; Shuowen says: beasts that run are tracked by dogs through their smell; it is composed of quan [犬] and zi [自]; 自 is the ancient character for nose; the sūtra writing it with si [死] as 臰 is incorrect; the second character is pronounced 於 + 喙 fanqie; Gu Yewang says: 穢 means unclean; Yunying says: 穢 means foul/evil; Kaosheng says: overgrown with weeds; it is also written as 薉; Shuowen says: it takes he [禾] as its classifier and 歲 as its phonetic).
