操柳枝 ("Holding a willow branch"): The first character is pronounced with the fanqie 草 + 刀 (cāo). The Mao Commentary on the Classic of Poetry states: 'Cāo is like holding (lǎn).' The Cangjie pian states: 'Cāo means to grasp and hold.' The Guangya states: 'It means to hold.' The Gujin zhengzi states that it takes the radical 手 (hand) with 喿 as the phonetic. The next character is pronounced with the fanqie 流 + 酉 (liǔ). Orthography books properly write it as 桺, the name of a river. The Shuowen jiezi states that it takes the radical 木 (wood) with 丣 as the phonetic. The catalogue text writes 柳, which is a vulgar character.
