撲翦（上普鹿反廣雅撲擊也蒼頡篇撲頭也說文從手菐聲下煎踐反杜注左傳翦盡也又翦滅也鄭注禮記翦猶煞也說文從羽前聲或作戩傳從刀作剪誤也）。

Crush and eradicate (撲翦): the first character has the fanqie 普鹿 [pū]. The Guangya states: '撲 means to strike.' The Cangjie pian states: '撲 means to beat.' Composed of 手 ('hand') with 菐 phonophore. The second character has the fanqie 煎踐 [jiǎn]. Du's Commentary on the Zuo zhuan states: '翦 means completely; it also means to exterminate.' Zheng's Commentary on the Liji states: '翦 is like killing.' The Shuowen jiezi states: 'Composed of 羽 ('feather') with 前 phonophore; sometimes written 戩.' In transmission, written with 刀 ('knife') as 剪, which is incorrect.
