Hinges and springs (樞機: the upper [character 樞 is] chu-yu fan [shū]; the lower [character 機 is] ju-yi fan [jī]. Guo [Pu]'s commentary on the Erya says: “Shu means the hinge-post of doors and gates.” Zhuangzi says: “The bramble gate is not complete; he uses a mulberry [branch] as a hinge-post.” Also: “He hollows out wood to make a mechanism (ji); where there are mechanical contrivances, there will certainly be mechanical minds.” Kong [Anguo]'s commentary on the Shangshu says: “Ji is the trigger of a crossbow.” 度 is pronounced tang-luo fan [duò]; the mechanism has markings (du) to aim and sight. Han Kangbo says: “The hinge and the spring are masters that initiate motion.” The Zhouyi says: “Once the hinge and the spring are triggered, they govern glory or disgrace.” The Shuowen [jiezi] says that both characters are formed with 木 ('wood'), with qu and ji both phonetic).
