茫眇（上莫傍反毛詩傳云茫茫廣大貌也杜注左傳遠貌也古今正字從水芒聲下彌了反說文云目小從目少少亦聲也）。

Vast and distant (茫: fanqie 莫傍 [máng]. The Mao Commentary on the Shijing says: "Mángmáng means vast and extensive." Du [Yu]'s commentary on the Zuozhuan says: "A distant appearance." The Gujin zhengzi states: "Composed of 水 ('water') with 芒 phonetic." The lower graph has the fanqie 彌了 [miǎo]. The Shuowen jiezi says: "The eyes being small; composed of 目 ('eye') with 少 ('few'), with 少 also phonetic").
