Having a pretext [for conflict] (釁: fanqie 欣覲 [xìn]. Du [Yu]'s commentary on the Zuozhuan says: "釁 means movement; it means guilt; it means a crack or fissure." Jia Kui's commentary on the Guoyu says: "釁 means omen, referring to an omen of calamity." The Shuowen jiezi states: "A blood sacrifice; depicting a sacrifice to the hearth god; composed of 爨 abbreviated, representing the implement of sacrifice, with 分 phonetic."
