"Tiny and diminutive" (蕞尒): [蕞 is pronounced with the fanqie] cui + nei (zui). Du [Yu]'s commentary on the Zuo zhuan says: 'Zui describes a tiny appearance.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'Zui'er (蕞尒) describes the appearance of a tiny state. It has the grass radical (艸) and zui (最) phonetic.' 最 is pronounced zi + hui (zui). The compiled text mistakenly writes it with the qu (取) component as cou (菆), pronounced ce + liu (chou), which means hemp stalks; that is not the intended meaning of the anthology.
