Search out and promote (搜揚: upper character is *shuang-liu* fanqie; Du [Yu]'s commentary on the *Zuo Zhuan* says: *sou* means to hide; the *Analects* says: 'How can a man conceal himself?'; Kong [Anguo]'s commentary says: *sou* means to conceal; the *Fangyan* says: to seek; seeking inside a room is called *sou* [𢶍]; the character dictionaries say: to search; the *Shuowen jiezi* says: the intention of a crowd; it derives from 手 with 叜 as phonetic; also written as 搜; 叜 is *sang-gou* fanqie; nowadays vulgar usage mostly writes it with 臼 as 叟, which is a variant clerical script form and not the standard character; lower character is *yang-zhang* fanqie; Kong [Anguo]'s commentary on the *Shangshu* says: *yang* means to lift up; Zheng [Xuan]'s commentary on the *Classic of Poetry* says: to surge; Wang [Yi]'s commentary on the *Chuci* says: to spread; the *Shuowen jiezi* says: to fly up; it derives from 手 with 昜 as phonetic; 昜 derives from 旦 and 勿; 昜 has the same pronunciation as above; the sūtra writes it with 攴 as 敭, which is the ancient form of 揚; 攴 is pronounced *pu-bu* fanqie, now abbreviated as 攴).
