頑嚚 [Stubborn and deceitful] (The upper character is fanqie 瓦 + 關 [wán]. The Kaosheng says: '頑 means stupid.' The Zuo zhuan says: 'When the mind does not conform to the standards of virtue and righteousness, that is 頑.' The Guangya says: '頑 means obtuse.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'It has the radical 頁 and the phonetic 元.' The lower character is fanqie 魚 + 巾 [yín]. The Kaosheng says: '嚚 also means stubborn and stupid.' The Zuo zhuan says: 'When the mouth does not speak words of loyalty and good faith, that is 嚚.' The Book of Documents says: 'Shun's father was 頑, his mother was 嚚, and Xiang was arrogant,' which is this. The Cangjie pian says: 'It means evil; it is composed of 𰀦 with the phonetic 臣; 𰀦 is pronounced fanqie 側 + 立 [zhì]').
